How should I prune my roses?

For winter pruning it is ideal to remove from half to two thirds of all growth; remove all dead wood and any spindly growth. Floribunda roses do not have to be pruned as hard, or if the rose bush is not growing as vigorously as other rose bushes in your garden. Ideally the rose should end up with about 3 to 5 canes, and the centre nicely opened to allow good air flow. Prune the cane down to a good thickness, no less than 10mm, ideally prune to an outward facing bud. Clean up all prunings, remove any old foliage still on the bush and pick up dead leaves.
